However, when these pages are opened in IE or FF, the text is displayed with a readable character size.

I was a little bit too soon with my conslusions, and would like to reopen this bug/issue. I suspect this site modifies requested content based on browser identification.

problem solved
It looks like they have updated the site, since the character size now looks okay!
