I am using using Feedreader 3.12RC and have discovered some problems with it.
Firstly, I am using the .zip version, and not the installable version.
I have extracted Feedreader to C:\FeedReader and then ran it. I added the feeds, and changed everything as I wanted. I then copied the feedreader.ini, rssengine.bak and RSSENGINE.FDB from C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data\Feedreader and put them in C:\FeedReader\Data.
I then added the line dbdirectory=C:\FeedReader\data in the [misc] section of feedreader.ini.
I then renamed C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data\Feedreader to C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data\Feedreader.old to ensure that Feedreader would use the new settings.
I then started up FeedReader, and it updated the feeds, which I thought initially was okay, even though the database should already have had the latest. I then closed FeedReader and opened it again, and it updated the feeds again. By updating, I mean the feeds are grey and ave no unread number to begin with until the update again. To me, this grey rss boxes until update again seems to be an issue.
I then went back to C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data and looked to see if a new \Feedreader folder was being created, It wasn't, which is a good sign.
Next, I went to Databse Information and it did say the database location as: C:\FeedReader\data\rssengine.fdb. Another good sign.
However, when I closed down FeedReader and started up feedreaderbackup.exe, and went to the details tab, it is still showing the Databse location as: C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data\Feedreader\rssengine.fdb and Backup file location as: C:\Documents and Settings\xxx\Application Data\Feedreader\rssengine.bak. This is definately an issue.
Great program otherwise. Just wish that to get it portable was much easier.
PS: I read somewhere that the feedreader.ini can only be in program\files\... or inC:\Documents and Settings\... Is this true? If so, that means that my scenario is not concrete and will fall over soon or later. Also, I hope that there is no such stupid limit to the program.
I took a lot of time to write to you. I hope that I get a decent reply and explanation also. Thanks a lot.
Same problem here
I had the same problem, and reported it 4 days ago in thread "Cannot edit the Database location" in the Support Requests forum. Still waiting for the answer as well.
I also wish that the feedreader.ini file location was customizable, but I guess that this is a chicken and egg problem. You need to tell the program in the first place where to look for setting information anyway.
I also wish that feedreader handled Windows environment variables in path names as well ( for example: %appdata% instead of having to type C:\Document and Settings\USER\Application Data ).
