I think the following two suggestions are essential for quick reading:

1. Delete should not have confirmation (or it should be toggle-able)
2. When a news item is deleted, move the current selection to the next item, not the previous.

This should allow users to quickly read and delete items that are not interesting - right now, it's hard to read quickly because of the two things above.
