Feedreader was actually open

Feedreader was actually open source until v3. I can't find news from before FR redid its site a couple years ago, but the FR guys actually made the decision to move to closed source when they "rewrote" it for the v3 release (notwithstanding the fact that they were accepting patches and code to go into v3 in the dev mailing list).

Observe:
Open source model for FR?

In "Poll: What kind of features you'd like to see in Feedreader?", abdelkrim suggests FR to move to an open source model and posted the link to the public report final report: http://www.publicsectoross.info/images/resources/15_154_file.pdf
-
I would like to start a new thread to discuss just this. I am not a developer myself, and not part of the FR team, I am just an individual user of FR with a few ideas about how to improve FR. I am glad to see that some of new ideas in this forum have been implemented in version 3.13, but this is only a tiny fraction of all suggestions made in this forum. My general feeling is that FR development team has been kind of slow to implement improvements in FR, or even to answer posts in this forum. Do not misread me, I think that the team is doing an excellent work, but users may gain if it was more transparent.
-
Jumping back to the pdf report, of which I just read the conclusion to be honest. The report discusses more about why administrations should or should not turn to using open source software, it does not really address the benefit for a sofware like FR to turn to an open source model.
-
I would like to hear the FR team explain why they chose the current model (source code not released, only the FR team may work on the code, no code contribution from the users).
-
This is just my personal opinion, but there are many great ideas for improving FR in this forum, and a very active user community. Some of the users may also be programmers. So my gut feeling is that making FR open source may benefit the speed of development, as new ideas may be implemented and tested more quickly. However, I guess that changing to open source also has its drawbacks, and may require a totally different set of competencies from the core FR team.
-
What is the opinion of the owners of FR?
